My parents put me in piano lessons in middle school and I quit, the way most kids do. I never got past the stage where every note had to be worked out from scratch, nothing stuck between lessons, and the whole thing felt like homework with a worse deadline. Years later I came across the usual claim that piano gets harder to learn as you age, decided I'd rather find out at 29 than at 49, and sat down again. It turns out the claim is mostly wrong, and that the reason it hadn't worked the first time had very little to do with my age or my ability.

What it had to do with was reading. I could follow along and I could copy, but I couldn't look at a page and know what it said, so every piece was a fresh act of memorisation that evaporated within a week. That's the gap a couple of friends and I built Melodease to close, a free piano learning tool with lessons from real teachers, built around reading rather than around watching notes fall down a screen. It's our own product and it gets mentioned on this site, so I'd rather say that plainly here than have you work it out from a review.

How these guides are researched

Every spec in the buying guides comes from the manufacturer's own documentation, and each entry records the date it was checked. Prices are verified against retailers at the time of writing and move constantly, so they're given as ranges rather than exact figures. Where a claim rests on a single source, or where I couldn't confirm something, the post says so.

Some posts contain affiliate links, which are marked. They don't affect which instruments get recommended, and nothing on the site is a paid placement.
